The book- New History of South Africa

The book begins with prehistory, then proceeds through iron-age mankind, covering the Khoikhoi and the great migrations of pre-colonial times; it then turns to slavery and the emergence of a modern working class with the discoveries of diamonds and gold; treats local war at the end of the 19th century and the ways in which the 20th century's world wars impacted locally; and finally takes up political organisation and resistance in South Africa up to the transition of 1994. It ends with an exploration of the dynamics of a new society.

Up-to-date international research is woven into a readable narrative history written by 28 of South Africa’s top historians and edited by two heavy-weight authorities.
